Is Domain Parking Worth the Trouble?
Posted by WhyPark | Under Internet Friday Nov 14, 2008If you’re thinking about getting into the domain parking industry then I′ll let you in on a little secret: The odds are stacked against you. This business has been dominated by a few big players for a while. If you’re starting from scratch, then you have as much chance to succeed in this game as a Tibetan monk with violent garlic allergies has at establishing himself as a dominant player in the Italian Mafia.
The domain parking industry is fundamentally flawed because it is passive. Any business plan that involves a lot of sitting around must eventually fail. It’s similar to any get-rich-quick scam that uses the phrase, “Just sit back and watch the money roll in!” I′ve heard countless eCommerce, Adsense and affiliate schemes that make this claim. They will tell you to have faith in their system, they will warn against doubters who want to steal your get-rich-quick dreams away from you. But I tell you: Don’t buy into anything that says, “Pay me $99.95 and I′ll tell you the secret to making money without having to work.”
Obviously some people make a living in the domain parking industry. I will tell you how they do it. First of all they have tons of awesome domains such as gardens.com or love.com. They do not depend on domains such as “ilikegardensalot.com” or “ireallylikelovealot.com.” Any domain with two or more words will probably never make back the money you spent to register it.
Be wary of buying domains that seem clever right now because they probably suck. You will discover this after it’s too late to cancel your domain choices and get a refund. It doesn’t even matter if you and all your friends think your domain names are clever. What matters is what the general masses think is clever.
Keep in mind that you need people to type your domain names manually. Search engines won’t help you because they hesitate to even acknowledge your parked pages. So you have to ask yourself honestly, “What are the chances of someone typing in ireallyreallylikegardensalot.com?” In order for your domain, ireallyreallylikegardensalot.com to pay for itself an average of one hundred separate people will have to type that entire domain every day.
You might try buying thousands of dollars worth of domains in hopes that they make more than what it cost to register them in the first place. If you purchased a domain from scratch that made $5 dollars more than what it cost you to register it per year, that would be a miracle. So what if you could find 10,000 similarly miraculous domains? Then you would have an administrative nightmare on your hands.
Another option is to purchase domains that are already popular. Suppose you bought a kick-ass domain for $20000. Suppose this domain was so awesome that it made you $1000 dollars per year on cash parking. How long will it take for this domain to pay for itself at that rate? 20 years.
Try to maintain a shrewd, business mindset. What’s the payoff here? What’s the timeframe before this investment starts to make a return above its original cost? Will the internet still exist by then?
There are a few domain parking companies that will do you right, such as NameDrive.com, Sedo.com or Godaddy.com. I am currently with Godaddy.com, making an average of 15 cents per click, which is unbeatable as far as I′ve seen. At this rate, I only need 10,000 clicks to break even. I′ve spent weeks’ worth of income and months’ worth of brainstorming energy to come this conclusion about domain parking: It’s not worth it.

And here’s what Wikipedia says about Domain Parking…
Domain parking is an advertising practice used primarily by domain name registrars and internet advertising publishers to monetize type-in traffic visiting an under-developed domain name. The domain name will usually resolve to a page containing advertising listings and links. These links will be targeted to the predicted interests of the visitor and may change dynamically based on the results that visitors click on. Usually the domain owner is paid based on how many links have been visited (e.g. pay per click) and on how beneficial those visits have been. The keywords for any given domain name provide clues as to the intent of the visitor before arriving.
Another use of domain parking is to be a placeholder of an existing web site. A company might choose to use this method to redirect its website traffic to another website it owns.
Expired domains that were formerly websites are also sought after for domain parking. A domain that was used as a website and is allowed to expire will still maintain most of its prior inbound links. These types of domains usually attract their largest amount of visitor traffic initially after being claimed from the domain drop lists. As website operators and search engines begin to remove the former inbound links, the traffic to the parked domain will begin to decline.
On domains with a ‘one-click’ implementation, a click on a keyword is not necessary to generate ads. The ads are targeted based on the domain name.
Domains with ‘two-click’ implementations require a click on a keyword or a keyword search to generate ads.
Domain parking can be classified as monetized and non-monetized. In the former, ads are shown to visitors and the domain is ‘monetized′. In the latter, an “Under Construction″ or a “Coming Soon″ message is put up on the domain. This a single page web site that people see when they type the domain name in a web browser. This is one quick way for getting an Internet presence. Domain names can be parked before a web site is ready for launching.
There are several companies that actively cater to domain name owners and act as middlemen to serve advertisements on parking pages. The parking pages are propagated automatically on a domain owner’s web property when they either change the name servers or forward the URL.
Domaineering is the business of acquiring and monetizing Internet domain names for their use primarily as an advertising medium rather than as an investment for resale as in domaining. In essence, the domain names function as virtual Internet billboards with generic domain names being highly valued for their revenue generating potential derived from attracting Internet traffic hits. As with traditional advertising, domaineering is part art and part science. Often to be the most effective as advertising tools, the domain names and their corresponding landing pages must be engineered or optimized to produce maximum revenue which may require considerable skill and knowledge of search engine optimization ( SEO ) practices, marketing psychology as well as an understanding of the target market audience. Domaineering generally utilizes a firm offering domain parking services to provide the sponsored “feed″ of a word or phrase searched for. Occasionally content is added to develop a functional mini-website. Domaineers and some of those who advertise online using keywords believe domaineering provides a useful, legal and legitimate Internet marketing service while opponents of domaineering decry the practice as increasing the ubiquitous commercialization of the world wide web. Domaineering is practiced by both large companies who may own hundreds or even thousands of domains to individual entrepreneurial minded domaineers who may only own one or a few.

Does anyone know about parking domains?
Posted by WhyPark | Under Programming & Design Thursday Nov 13, 2008I recently purchased a domain name in hopes of creating a website. After playing around with the site I decided to park it for awhile until I had time to finish creating the site (sorry I’m a perfectionist). I know that when a domain is parked advertisers are pretty much in control of the site, but do they change the layout alot? It seems like the layout/background is different every few days. Is there anyone who could explain this to me?

Is California proposition 99 a con trick to cheat voters of the protection of proposition 98?
Posted by WhyPark | Under Elections Sunday Nov 2, 2008Don’t Count on Prop. 99 by Ilya Somin This article appeared in the Los Angeles Times on May 19, 2008.
On June 3, Californians will vote on Proposition 99, a ballot initiative sponsored by groups representing cities, counties, redevelopment agencies and other pro-condemnation interests. It purports to protect property rights against eminent domain, but it actually provides almost no protection.
Two San Gabriel Valley cities illustrate the dangers of unbridled condemnation authority. Baldwin Park plans to use eminent domain to demolish more than 500 homes and businesses and transfer the land to a politically influential developer who plans to build a mall. La Puente is trying to use eminent domain to take over a small shopping center, displacing 13 small businesses. The city claims that the area is “blighted″ — making it eligible for or condemnation under state law — even though there is no evidence of dilapidation.
Both of these “takings” of private property would probably be
permitted under Prop 99, since it protects only owner-occupied houses against condemnations with the purpose of transferring property to “private persons.” That leaves renters — 42% of Californian households — unprotected. … renters can be forced out even if their leases haven’t expired
… protection for homeowners covered under Prop 99 is likely ineffective… homes can still be taken for private developers if the proposed project allocated some space for a library, etc. Government can say the purpose is promoting “development,” circumventing the ban.
Economic development takings often transfer property from the poor to the politically powerful.
[On] California’s June ballot is Prop 98, it really would forbid “economic development” condemnations and other abuses. Absent Prop 99, Prop 98 would likely pass … Prop 99 invalidates any other eminent domain referendum passed the same day so long as 99 receives a greater vote than Prop 98. Many voters are unlikely to realize this.
